Zhang Xinsheng, China’s Vice Minister of Education, was re-elected as the vice president of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) here on Sunday at FISU’s 30th General Assembly.
Zhang, 59, was first elected as the vice president of FISU in the year 2003 on the occasion of 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea. Prior to his re-election, George Killian from the United States, 88, was also re-elected as the President of FISU.
Zhang, also the president of the Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF), said,”Besides the routine work as vice president of FISU, I will do my best in the second tenure to help Haerbin (in north China) and Shenzhen (in south China) hold the best-ever (winter and summer) Universiade in 2009 and 2011 respectively.”
The Executive Committee, as the top decision-making organization of FISU, is composed of 23 members, elected for four years by the elective General Assembly. Besides the president, there are one first vice president, four vice presidents, the treasurer, the first assessor and 15 assessors.
Bhutan, together with Montenegro and Netherlands Antilles, have become the fresh members of FISU at the Assembly today, leaving other seven applicants to wait till the next general assembly to be held in Shenzhen, China, in 2011.
With the three new comers, FISU now has a total of 125 members. The Universiade, initiated by FISU, is held once every two years.
The 24th Universiade will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from Aug. 8 to 18. About 160 countries and regions will be attending the 11-day international multi-sport games.
