UNIVERSIADE_UNIVERSIADE 2011 SHENZHEN-Shenzhen Embraces the World

Singapore and Malaysia University Sports Federations will send as many athletes as possible to Universiade

“We will send more athletes to the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade than those to the Belgrade last year”, that is what both Singapore and Malaysia University Sports Federations have promised to do. From August 18 to August 25, on the invitation of Singapore and Malaysia University Sports Federations, Deputy Director of the Universiade Executive Office Ke Gangming paid a visit to Singapore and Malaysia. Briefing the officials of University Sports Federations of the two countries on the Shenzhen Universiade preparations, the Shenzhen delegation expressed gracious invitation to them.

During the trip, the Shenzhen delegation had a talk with representatives from Singapore University Sports Federation Members such as National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore University of Management, and Singapore Institute of Management in National University of Singapore. Firstly, Shenzhen delegates briefed on the Shenzhen Universiade preparations, especially the Universiade competition schedule, competition project settings, competition venues, logistical support and information support. As well, a Universiade propaganda film was seen. The representatives from Singapore universities showed great interests in the Shenzhen Universiade. And they thought highly of the Universiade in terms of venue construction and competition project settings. They said it is their honor to receive the invitation from the Shenzhen Universiade. Although it is the beginning of the new semester in Singapore universities in August when the Universiade opens, they will also send as many athletes as possible to Universiade.

In University Putra Malaysia, on behalf of universities of Malaysia, DATO’ MOHID BIN MOHAMED, Secretary – General of Malaysia University Sports Federation also extended his welcome to the Shenzhen delegation. After introducing the organization and work purposes of Malaysia University Sports Federation, Secretary – General DATO’ MOHID BIN MOHAMED asked the delegates about some issues they concern, like the Universiade competition schedule, competition project settings and catering services. As it is their Ramadan next August when the Universiade starts, some troubles may come along with the Universiade. DATO’ MOHID BIN MOHAMED said, though, as a friendly country to China and an Asia University Sports Federation member, Malaysia will overcome any trouble, and send as many athletes as possible to the Shenzhen Universiade. Ke Gangming presented the Universiade mascot “UU” to representatives from Malaysia University Sports Federation Members like MalaccaUniversity, Northern University and Muslim University, and answered the questions they are concerned about.

In Singapore, the host country of the first Youth Olympics, the delegation took an inspection on the site of the Youth Olympics Opening Ceremony, which was held on a floating stage at the Marina Bay of Singapore. As was told, the Organizing Committee built a reflection pool full of 200 tons of water. With 750 students standing in the middle of the reflection pool and forming the shape of Five Circles, over 7,000 young performers contributed a splendid gala on the reflection pool. Themed “ For the Youths, By the Youths”, the Youth Olympics venues were carefully designed to meet the competition requirements, under a strict cost control. For example, the temporarily – built functional areas can be removed within 15 days after the Games. What impressed the Shenzhen delegates most is the traffic support for the Youth Olympics. During the Games, a special Youth Olympics Lane was set for the Games. It only had the priority of transportation, though, with other vehicles also running on it. On the windscreen of those vehicles specially serving the Games, words “GIVE WAY” can be clearly seen by the drivers going on the lane ahead them, so that the drivers would give the way to the Games. Besides, the delegation inspected the water sports and basketball events of the Games. They not only collected some information relevant to the traffic support and logistical support for the Youth Olympics, but also exchanged opinions with the working staff there. The experience with the Youth Olympics merits Shenzhen’s reference and study, they said.
