SHENZHEN was granted jurisdiction over Inner Lingding Island, a wildlife reserve between Hong Kong’s Yuen Long and Shenzhen’s Shekou, by the Guangdong government Friday.
Shenzhen and its neighbor Zhuhai had been divided for years on which city the island should belong to.
The 4.84-square-kilometer island, 9 kilometers from Shekou, and Futian Nature Reserve in the city formed a State-level nature reserve in 1988. The island has a population of 600.
The reserve covers 7.8 square kilometers, including 4.5 square kilometers of land area and 3.3 kilometers of mangrove forest. It was created to protect some 300 rhesus macaques and other animals, such as pangolins and pythons.
