SHENZHEN_UNIVERSIADE 2011 SHENZHEN-Shenzhen Embraces the World

A MAN in his 20s raised eyebrows in the Huaqiangbei commercial area recently when he used an advertising board to look for a wife “who is willing to commit to a marriage with no apartment or bank savings,” Chinese-language newspapers reported yesterday.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, wrote on the board: “I want to have a home.”

According to the Guangzhou Daily, the man claimed he did not own an apartment, did not have a car, had no bank savings and no social connections, but he wanted a home and a child. He came to Shenzhen to work four years ago when he graduated from college, earning only 2,800 yuan (US$413) a month.

His stunt attracted hundreds of onlookers, the paper said.

“He is brave to pursue what he wants even though he can’t afford a home in a society in which apartments, cars and money are seen as essentials to attract someone who will marry you,” one of the onlookers told the Daily.

The man is one of millions of young men who remain single just because they are not “financially attractive.”

Marriage had become increasingly unaffordable for many young people who work in the city where property prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. “That explains why such a stunt caught the attention of so many passers-by, who share the same feelings,” Zhou Xiaozheng, a professor at the social sciences research center at the Renmin University of China, was quoted as saying.
