AS the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China approaches, Shenzhen has seen an approximate 30 percent increase in the sale of holiday decorations over the same period last year.

Among the most popular are red Chinese knots, Chinese national flags and lanterns.

In several gift, stationery and toy wholesale markets in Sungang, Luohu District, an increasing number of consumers has been buying Chinese knots, the Shenzhen Daily was told.

“We have company and individual buyers for the knots to decorate their offices and houses for [the New] China’s 60th anniversary,” said a female shopkeeper surnamed Huang in Sungang Gifts, Stationery & Toys Wholesale Market.

The Chinese knots with a character “xi,” a double-happiness symbol used in wedding ceremonies, were well received because many young couples were planning wedding parties during the eight-day holiday, the shopkeepers said.

Such sale increases in decorations were usually seen during the period before the Spring Festival, the wholesalers said.

In contrast to previous years when Chinese flags didn’t go on sale until 10 days before National Day, retailers started to receive large orders for Chinese flags as early as July this year, with sizes varying from book-size to 6 square meters.

The situation was echoed at supermarkets, including Rainbow Department Store, Vanguard and Shirble Department Store, as well as gift and stationery stores in Futian and Luohu districts.
