Highlights_UNIVERSIADE 2011 SHENZHEN-Shenzhen Embraces the World

“UU” face lights up the city

At about the 200 – day countdown to the Universiade, Shenzhen citizens and visitors have been surprised to find that the Universiade logo “Happy U” and mascot “UU” are smiling to them, when they are walking on the streets. In fact, that is a special Universiade scenery line contributed by the Universiade Executive Office and Shenzhen Traffic Police Bureau. Now, colorful Universiade cultural signs can be seen on every main street of the city, making Shenzheners feel a strong joyful Universiade atmosphere in their daily lives.

Early this year, the “Universiade zebra line” bearing huge colored Universiade logo on main streets of Futian District added much vivacity to dull cement roads. After that, the Universiade logo “Happy U” and mascot “UU” appeared on every street of urban area, August to October. At main ports like Luohu, Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay, on densely populated sites like Dongmen, Guomao and Huaqiang North, and at Shenzhen Library, Music Hall, Children’s Palace and the gate of Lianhuashan Park, a variety of clear and distinct Universiade icons can be found everywhere. As told, there have been eight “Universiade zebra lines” so far. Moreover, on 14 main streets, 7,500 guardrail signs with the Universiade logo and mascot on them have been installed along the 5 – kilometer traffic guardrails. With the Universiade around the corner, the “Universiade scenery line” will be extending longer.

It is Shenzhen Traffic Police Bureau that helps carry out the Executive Office’s promotion campaign “Universiade scenery line”. Back to last November, learning from the “loving heart zebra line” and “love zebra line” which was coined by Chengdu Traffic Police, the Executive Office came up with the promotion campaign “Universiade scenery line”, in which the zebra lines of the most prosperous road sections and traffic guardrails are used to promote the Universiade. After research and discussion, Shenzhen Traffic Police Bureau approved the project. As laying zebra lines is a professional job, they help the Executive Office with the campaign a lot, by seeking for professional manufacturers and cooking up the construction plans.

It is said that common Shenzheners feel good about those Universiade cultural icons coming into their lives. “Every time I step out of the door, there will be a smiling UU face right there waiting for me. It is amazing.” Ms. Guo living near Huanggang Port had this to say, “I really marvel at the creative idea of putting UU on guardrails.” At a crossing of Futian District, a mother who crossed the road with her kid said to the report, “the zebra line with Universiade logo would lure people to get on it, especially kids, coz it is great fun. In this way, citizens obey the traffic rules unconsciously.”
