A SHENZHEN policewoman last month single-handedly set up an aid enter in Futian District for homeless children that has so far admitted more than 20 children.
The young inmates at the Jinping Youths and Children Supporting Center, set up on June 20 by Bao Jinping with the Shenzhen Police Station Futian Branch, earlier used to be beggars and thieves.
Bao was a member of the Beijing Armed Police Military Troupe before she became a policewoman in Shenzhen in 1999. She came across a lot of homeless youths when on duty. “They didn’t have ID cards, no education no living skills to support themselves,” said Bao, adding that most of them begged in the streets or even stole to survive.
Bao was very concerned about the youths, and took them to the city’s shelters. However, she was not convinced they would receive the best care and education at the shelters.
For this reason she established the aid center with the money received from selling two apartments and a car.
Bao has spared no effort in helping the inmates. Apart from taking care of them and educating them, she also tries to find them jobs.
According to the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, about 30 youths have so far been recommended by Bao to work in local property management companies.
She has also set up a non-profit performance troupe comprising the aid center’s inmates. The troupe performs songs and dances in local communities.
“I’m very busy every day. I teach them how to perform, take them to perform and care about every details of their daily life, including dining, showering and even pissing,” said Bao.
The newspaper reported that Bao expects to spend 20,000 yuan (US$2,632) a month on the aid center.
“I did everything with my passion during these years,” said Bao. “Although I am facing economic embarrassment, I will continue to help these children.” (Cao Zhen)
