A DRUNK driver was taken into criminal detention for violently resisting and hindering police when he was stopped for a roadside check in the early hours Saturday.
The driver surnamed Li, a native of Harbin, was half-naked when he was stopped on Fenghuang Road in Luohu District, traffic police said in a news release yesterday.
He was described as being nervous when a police officer, surnamed Wu, approached and asked to see his driver’s license.
“He first went to the trunk to get his license, there was nothing there apart from his swimming goggles and pants. Then he lied, saying he had left it in the car,” Wu said.
But when police officers demanded a breath test, Li insisted he should produce his license first.
He suddenly jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to start the engine. Wu grabbed Li’s left hand and prevented him from pressing the accelerator and fleeing.
Another officer, Zhou Yongqing, rushed to the passenger side and tried to remove the car key. Li had already started the car but could not take off because Wu had applied the handbrake and was holding it firmly. The car almost knocked down a third when Li tried to drive off. Wu suffered scratches to his right arm.
An alcohol test showed that the blood-alcohol content was 170mg/100ml, almost double the legal limit of 80 mg/100ml.
He was also not licensed.
