Donated organs help five

ORGANS donated by the family of a brain-dead man in Shenzhen had helped five patients in three cities by Wednesday.

The liver of Liu Daixiang, the 35-year-old donor, was transplanted to a Guangzhou patient Tuesday afternoon, hours after the donation was made to Shenzhen Red Cross.

Liu’s two kidneys went to another two in Guangzhou while the recipients of his corneas were a 32-year-old Shenzhen woman and an unidentified Chengdu resident.

Liu was the 32nd organ donor in Shenzhen.

The man, who worked in Shenzhen for eight years, was attacked by one of his colleagues in a paper factory in Guangming New Zone on Feb. 14.

Liu sustained serious head injuries and was admitted to Gongming Hospital, where he was diagnosed brain dead.

The attacker told police that he took revenge on Liu for an insult.

Only 30 percent of Shenzhen patients needing an organ transplant each year get the organs they need. Few people are willing to donate their relatives’ organs because of traditional beliefs.

So far, some 5,000 Shenzhen volunteers have registered to donate marrow and corneas and 12 have donated their bodies.
