Citywide food safety inspections launched

THE newly inaugurated Shenzhen Market Supervision and Administration Bureau is undertaking citywide food safety inspections through Oct. 10 to ensure food safety and provide consumers with guidance on quality food brands.

More than 700 people attended the bureau’s launch ceremony in Futian on Friday, including representatives from 200 food manufacturers, 125 wet markets, 125 supermarkets and stores, the Shenzhen Retail Industry Association, the Shenzhen Food Industry Association and the city’s poultry and meat associations.

They were required to ensure food safety as the National Day holiday and the Mid-Autumn Festival approach, particularly for moon cakes, soybean products and pork.

Large-scale inspections will be conducted on manufacturing processes and sales of products. Inspection results will be released before the holiday to aid consumers, the bureau’s vice head Liao Yuanfei told the meeting.

“Those selling additive-tainted food, products not marked with the name of the manufacturer or expiration dates, or products that fail to meet standards, will be punished,” Liao said, adding that he hoped the inspections could help consumers enjoy a safe holiday.

The bureau, together with 30 other agencies, was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in the city’s biggest administrative reform in history.
