Beijing opening ceremony stuns expats

Wang Yuanyuan

EXPATRIATES in Shenzhen said they were stunned by Friday’s opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, describing it as one of the most marvelous opening ceremonies in history.

Some said the lighting of the cauldron was the most impressive part of the ceremony. “It’s wonderful to see retired gymnast Li Ning walking in the air with a torch, such a brilliant idea to light up the cauldron,” said American Jesse Warren, 28, a teacher with Shenzhen Radio and Television University, on Saturday.

“The fireworks were amazing, spectacular, creative and so beautiful. I wish I could have been in the Bird’s Nest,” Sebastian Buckle from Germany, 27, said. He especially liked the big footprints running from downtown Beijing to the Bird’s Nest.

“The high technology used at the opening ceremony was great,” said Lee Anthony, 29, from Scotland. “As a foreigner, I really saw a real China through the ceremony, its culture, its history, its people,” he said.

Businessman Laurent De Busscher from Belgium, 32, said the performances at the ceremony showed a splendid history and rich culture of China in outstanding ways.

However, some foreigners felt confused, saying it was a little bit difficult to understand. “I can see what they are doing, but I don’t see the links between all the stories,” Roy Smith from Australia, in Shenzhen for the first time, said Friday.
