Bid victory adds power to SZ sports

In the small hours of Jan. 17 George E. Killian president of the International University Sports Federation FISU announced during an executive meeting of the FISU in Turin Italy that Shenzhen will host the 2011 Universiade. Having grown up in Shenzhen Yi Jianlian the 19-year-old basketball star was one of the ambassadors for the Shenzhen bid.

The final result was win-win — Yi worked hard on the bid and his identity as the bid ambassador brought more attention to him. On June 29 Yi finally realized his dream of being a member of basketball elite after he was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA draft. As an overseas player in NBA Yi was not in touch with the Bucks. However even before signing the contract the Bucks promised to make Yi a top player which shows the team’s confidence in Yi’s ability and influence.

Living in one of the most modern cities in China Shenzheners have a great deal of passion for sports. Besides Yi a group of famous sportspeople come from Shenzhen including gymnastics world champion Feng Jing world diving champion He Zi Asian walking champion Liu Hong Asian shooting champion Liu Gang and Asian sailboarding champion Chen Lina. Atop Mount Qomolangma the highest peak in the world many Shenzheners like Wang Shi Liang Qun Li Weiwen and Rao Jianfeng left their footprints.

In addition many of the world’s top golfers including Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam have visited Shenzhen Mission Hills Golf Club the biggest club in the world with 216 holes where the Mission Hills World Cup will be held in the next 12 years.(曹真 译)
