The major venues for the 2011 Universiade also known as the “young Olympics” will be located in the suburban Longgang District in Shenzhen. This has provided the region with a historic opportunity to upgrade its facilities and achieve fast growth.
“With a vision of the development in Shenzhen and in Guangdong Province as a whole Longgang faces the challenge of two big missions” said a top district official.
“One is to make preparations for the Universiade which is also our central task in the following four years. The other is to build Longgang into a new modern town with facilities up to the scratch in the 21 century. The second is also a strategic and long-term task” he said.
To fulfill the tasks the Longgang District Government has pledged to upgrade the district’s industries and urban facilities as well as providing spiritual uplift to the area’s residents.
The local government is now focused on the construction of the Sports New Town a major venue of the event and the Metro Line 3 which will link downtown Shenzhen with Longgang. Relocation of residents and business is taking place to get the land ready for the projects.
