New vice mayors appointed

    Cai Yingbo

Xu Qin, member of the Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, and Li Feng, the city’s former police chief, were elected vice mayors by the city’s top legislators Friday.

Xu was the former director of High Tech Agency of National Development and Reform Commission before he was appointed a member of the standing committee of the city’s CPC committee a week ago.

The holder of a Ph.D. from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Xu had been working in the high-tech industry for years before his appointment at the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Fourth Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, which concluded Friday.

He has visited Shenzhen many times to participate in the China Hi-Tech Fair, an annual event initiated in 1999, and encouraged the city to continue on the path of creative development.

Li Feng, 48, was the director general of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau before the election, and he was regarded as an official with an innovative spirit.

During his tenure, he reformed the duties of police stations, substantially decreasing the number of offenses committed, according to police figures. A survey released by the Shenzhen Municipal Statistics Bureau, which interviewed respondents between December 2007 to March 2008, showed that 85.6 percent of residents felt safe in public, and 90.2 percent of residents were satisfied with police work.

Vice Mayor Li Ming was appointed the new chief of the public security bureau. Li, 53, will remain as vice mayor.
