THE first phase of Metro Line 2 and the elevated part of Metro Line 3 opened yesterday, bringing city Metro rail length to 90 kilometers and beginning the formation of the city Metro network.

The first phase of Metro Line 2, between Window of the World and Chiwan, Shekou, will operate between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. with trains departing at 10-minute intervals.

Metro Line 3 will run between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. at 10-minute intervals in rush hours. It will run between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at 15-minute intervals during off-peak hours.

Metro Line 2 extends 15.5 kilometers servicing 12 stations, while Metro Line 3 from Shuanglong Station in Longgang to Caopu in Luohu District runs 25 kilometers and services 16 stations. Line 2 commuters can change to Metro Line 1 at the Window of the World Station.

“The opening of the two lines marks the beginning of the city’s Metro network, and residents will benefit more from the Metro service when the five lines open on the eve of the Summer Universiade in August,” Lu Ruifeng, executive vice mayor, said at a launch ceremony.

Lu traveled from Shekou Port Station to the Civic Center by changing to Metro lines 1 and 4 after the ceremony.

“Commuting between Metro lines is convenient and efficient. We could expect city traffic to be improved after more lines open next year,” Lu said before leaving the Civic Center Station for his office.

The entire Line 2 journey will cost five yuan (US$0.74) while Line 3 seven yuan.
