SHENZHEN airport saw delays of around 200 flights departing and arriving in the city by 6 p.m. yesterday because of Fanapi, the 11th typhoon of the year.

Around 20 flights were canceled, Shenzhen airport said.

Shenzhen Airlines flights to Taiwan were delayed for about an hour yesterday.

Two flights from Taiwan to Shenzhen were delayed Saturday because of Fanapi, which made its first landfall in eastern coast of Taiwan on Sunday morning. Only one helicopter service between Shenzhen and Macao was canceled.

The super typhoon weakened into a tropical storm at 2 p.m. yesterday. It was 230 kilometers west of Shenzhen, in Jieyang City, at 4 p.m.

Fanapi brought a rainfall of 20-50 millimeters to the east of Shenzhen including Dapeng Peninsula, Pingshan New Zone and Yantian District, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

Fanapi, which is moving westward, will pass Shenzhen at a distance of 100 kilometers and bring heavy rain today. It will be further weakened when it enters Guangxi on tonight.

Shenzhen disaster relief and flood prevention headquarters had initiated a Level IV response and required related departments to be well prepared for Fanapi.

No casualties were reported by 6 p.m., the headquarters said.
