SINISA JASNIC, vice president of the Organizing Committee of the Belgrade Universiade in 2009, said Saturday that he hoped the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen would be better than the Universiade in his city.
“The Bangkok Universiade this August has 15 events. In Belgrade 2009 there will be 21 sports and Shenzhen needs more effort to exceed us,” said Jasnic, who is also a member of the FISU Executive Committee.
“The challenge for Shenzhen is that Serbia is a small country, while China is big,” he said.
“If Shenzhen wants to host a better Universiade, it should have advanced timing and scoring systems which are better than the Olympic Games in addition to facilities,” said Jasnic.
In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, there are 260,000 college students and University of Belgrade alone has more than 100,000 students.
“One problem that Serbia and other countries are facing is the departure of talented athletes. Many quit universities and their opportunity to study and signed with sports leagues and clubs,” said Jasnic.
Belgrade is working hard to organize its Universiade and plans 21 sports events in 67 sports venues, 90 percent of which had been completed, he added. (Han Ximin, Shenzhen Daily)
