SZ Universiade logo for bid

Shenzhen unveiled the logo for its 2011 Universiade at a press conference Thursday.

Han Zhanning, the logo designer and secretary of the Shenzhen Graphic Designers’ Association, explained the meaning of the logo to the press.

“The logo consists of three U-shape ribbons as U is the first letter of Universiade. I arrange the three ribbons to form a big ‘S,’ which shows that Shenzhen is the place to hold such a game. The logo as a whole looks like a flying dragon, which is the traditional symbol of China,” Han said.

“Blue represents the ocean as Shenzhen is a coastal city. Red symbolizes China and its passion for sports. Green stands for vitality and the future. Universiade is a stage for the young people and Shenzhen is also a young city. So I think Shenzhen has many characteristics of Universiade as both are young, passionate, energetic and vivacious,” he said.

The Shenzhen Graphic Designers’ Association was responsible for designing the logo. More than 200 works have been gathered since July 1. The present logo was chosen July 18 and passed July 20.

The logo will be seen in various places in the city and used throughout the whole bidding process.

A senior official with the city’s bidding committee said Shenzhen would be challenged by many competent bidders from the world, but he did not elaborate.

Shenzhen is expected to become the second Chinese city to host the games after Beijing hosted the 21st Universiade in 2001.
