City subsidies for new energy development

INSTITUTIONS engaged in the research and development (R&D) of new energy and new energy projects can expect to receive up to 15 million yuan (US$2.19 million) in government subsidies from this year on.

In the next seven years, the city government will spend 500 million yuan each year to support the development of the new energy industry, yesterday’s Securities Times reported, quoting a recent government decision.

The lion’s share of the subsidies will go to six new energy sectors, including solar energy, nuclear energy, new energy automobiles, energy storage, biomass energy, wind power and nuclear power auxiliary facilities. R&D, lab construction, product application, nurturing of talent and promotion will receive the most support.

Besides installing solar panels on new buildings and some existing buildings, the city government would also promote LED (light-emitting diode) products and new energy vehicles, an earlier report in the Daily Sunshine said. By 2015, the total number of new energy automobiles in Shenzhen is expected to reach 100,000.

The maximum subsidy of 15 million yuan will be granted to enterprises, institutions of higher learning and research institutes engaged in State and provincial new energy projects, according to the decision. Post-doctoral work stations will each receive a lump sum of 500,000 yuan while an innovation base will be granted a one-off amount of 200,000 yuan.

Institutions of higher learning will be offered a maximum 10 million yuan for the introduction of a new energy industry related major. The money is to be used for purchasing teaching facilities and setting up training bases.

By 2015, the new energy industry will become a new pillar industry in Shenzhen, with the annual output value reaching more than 250 billion yuan, according to a government program. Of the total, the output value of the new energy automobile sector will reach more than 80 billion yuan, the storage energy sector 56 billion yuan and the solar energy sector 40 billion yuan.

The city’s output value of the new energy industry was about 30 billion yuan in 2008.
