INTERNATIONAL ping pong champion Guo Yue will be among the 6,918 freshmen entering Shenzhen University when the new term begins this month.
Guo won Women’s Team World Table Tennis Championships in 2004 when she was 16, making her the youngest world champion in China’s ping pong history. She also won the women’s world championship in 2007 and 2009.
Guo is one of 23 top national athletes who will study sports training, a new major being offered by Shenzhen University in the new term.
The enrollment of high-level athletes was in preparation for the Summer Universiade, which will be held in Shenzhen in 2011, the university said.
“Shenzhen University will take every chance to become involved in the Universiade,” said Zhang Bigong, Shenzhen University president. “The new sports training major will be a reserve for sportsmen and women for the university’s participation in the Games,” Zhang said.
The new term will see the addition of four new majors: clinical medicine, sports training, journalism and microelectronics.
