New rules for holiday traffic management

SHENZHEN traffic police authority will impose a three-level traffic management system on the roads near tourist attractions in the city’s east during the National Day holidays.

The tourist attractions include OCT East, Dameisha, Xiaomeisha, Ocean Park, Minsk World and beaches in Nan’ao. Police will set up a temporary command office at Dameisha beach.

The move is intended to ensure the smooth flow of traffic on Eastern Coastal Expressway and Yanba Expressway, as well as to leave more space for traffic police officers to guide vehicles, the traffic police bureau said yesterday.

When the traffic frequency reaches 2,000 vehicles per hour on Eastern Coastal Expressway and increases at a speed of 16.7 vehicles per minute, or if 80 percent of the parking spaces at Xiaomeisha, Dongchong, Xichong and Dapeng have been occupied, traffic police will impose first-level management by setting up vehicle control stations on Luosha Road, Yanhe Road and Eastern Coastal Expressway. Vehicles will be diverted to other exits of Eastern Coastal Expressway. Police will also set up three stations to the west of Tiandong Tunnel, Dameisha Tollgate, Kuichong Tollgate of Yanba Expressway to handle accidents.

Authorities have called on residents to take buses for holiday trips and will set up a dedicated bus lane on Yanba Expressway.

Level 1 management will be imposed in the afternoon from Thursday to Saturday.

The level will be downgraded from Sunday to Thursday based on the number of vehicles on the roads.

Traffic police will also launch campaigns against drink driving and dump truck violations during the holidays.

Around 15,000 police officers will be on duty during the holidays to tackle violations, a news release of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau said. Fatigued drivers on expressways will be encouraged to rest, and speeding drivers who exceed the speed limit by over 50 percent will have their drivers’ licenses revoked.
