SZ song echoes in Beijing

A SHENZHEN song has been selected as one of the most important songs in a State-level epic musical and in a military review in Beijing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the municipal government said Monday.

The song “Walk Towards Rejuvenation” echoed in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday, in the music and dance epic “Road of Rejuvenation.”

The writers of the song, Shenzhen residents Li Weifu and Yin Qing, were received by the city’s Party chief Liu Yupu on Sunday. The song had been up against intense competition, with hundreds of songs written for China’s 60th anniversary, Li and Yin said.

“Different from singles, ‘Walk Towards Rejuvenation’ is performed by a group of people and was very difficult for us to write. Our inspiration came from Shenzhen’s overwhelming success in the reform and opening-up drive, which is closely related to the nation’s rejuvenation,” said Li, who wrote the lyrics.

The song was selected from among hundreds of songs submitted to a musical project in Shenzhen.

Yin, the song’s composer, said he had spent one month deciding on the type of music to write. “I had thought about pop music and jazz, but neither sounded better than it does now.”

Yin’s relationship with the city can be traced back 12 years when he first collaborated with a local writer to come up with “Walk into the New Era,” which became one of the most popular songs in China.

Liu, who watched the musical’s rehearsal in Tian’anmen Square in Beijing on Friday, said the song had impressed a lot of people because it was inspiring, passionate and melodious.

Music mogul Xu Peidong, vice chairman of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, said Sunday: “Shenzhen is an ideal ‘nest’ for musicians thanks to its comprehensive facilities, artistic atmosphere and the city’s support of musicians.”
