THE recruitment of volunteers for the 2011 Universiade will start next month, Shenzhen Vice Mayor Liang Daoxing said at a promotion for the Shenzhen Universiade in Beijing on Sunday.

The volunteers will fall into four categories according to the type of service. They will include volunteers to promote Universiade culture and Shenzhen’s image, volunteers for sports event preparations, volunteers at sports venues and volunteers for other services outside the venues.

The recruitment of volunteers for cultural promotion and sports event preparations will be officially launched in September while the recruitment of volunteers for the sports venues and other services will start next year.

People born before June 30, 1993 and abide by Chinese law and regulations are eligible to apply, while those born before June 30, 1995 can volunteer for cultural promotion.

International university students who speak some Chinese are welcome.

The activity is part of the monthlong campaign to promote the Universiade to be hosted in Shenzhen.

Liang called on university students from home and abroad to participate in the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen in 2011 to serve athletes, coaches and officials.

“Let’s ‘start here’ and make a promise for the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen. We sincerely invite university students from different cities in China and abroad to contribute to the 26th Universiade,” said Liang.

Around 15,000 athletes, coaches and sports officials from more than 180 countries and regions will gather for the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, according to the 2011 Universiade organizing committee.
