City link to entrepreneur of the year

Shenzhen Daily (Han Ximin) IRISH businessman Liam Casey, chief executive of Shenzhen-based PCH International, was named among 10 winners of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 at a recent gala evening in Dublin, Ireland.

The award is the world’s most prestigious business honor for corporate leaders. Recognized globally, the award provides a unique way of encouraging entrepreneurial activity and recognizes the contribution of outstanding individuals who inspire others with their vision and achievement.

“I feel very proud to win the award and the reason I think is PCH International’s successful expansion in China, which serves as a link between China and Ireland,” Casey said Thursday.

In 1996, just after he turned 30, Casey went to Taipei for an exhibition and it changed his life.

“That was my first trip to Asia and I found huge business opportunities in China,” said Casey.

He then quit the garment industry and came to Shenzhen with a friend to start a business in electronic products, setting up PCH.

The company mainly sources low-priced components in factories in Pearl River Delta areas for some of the world’s biggest IT and telecom companies.

In 10 years, it has expanded to become a world-class supply chain management company focused on consumer electronics, high-tech and medical sectors with a staff of 800, including 30 expats.

PCH International had sales of US$117 million last year.

“Working and living in Shenzhen, the most dynamic and fast-growth city in China, is great, said Casey.

“Shenzhen is growing very fast and we have moved offices five times in the past few years to find more space for expansion,” said Casey.

The quest to find the entrepeneur of the year was conducted in more than 100 cities in more than 40 countries. More than 10,000 entrepreneurs compete each year for the world title. Casey won the International Category before being announced as the overall 2007 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

He will represent Ireland at the World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monte Carlo in June 2008.
