“PLEASE wait until the traffic light turns green,” Jiang, a Shenzhen Volunteers Association member, reminded pedestrians at the Zhenhua crossing in Huaqiangbei yesterday morning.

She was one of nearly 1,000 volunteers who stationed themselves at intersections in Futian District to persuade residents to abide by traffic rules.

This marked the launch of a weeklong campaign covering 71 intersections in the city.

The campaign advocates harmonious transport and is aimed at making traffic run smoothly and improve people’s awareness of road safety.

“Through our efforts, pedestrians are more aware of obeying traffic rules on busy streets and the number of traffic violations has been greatly reduced,” Wang Hui, the association’s activity coordinator, said yesterday.
