Shenzhen has witnessed vigorous development of mass sports. In 2006, a sports campaign was launched across the whole city, which resulted in 41 percent of Shenzhen’s population engaged in sports. Of the adult population, 18.7 percent participate in sports activities three times or more every week. More than 48 percent of the adult population enjoy good health.
In July 2004, Shenzhen started its official bid application to host the 26th Universiade in 2011. The International University Sports Federation named Shenzhen the host city of the 2011 Summer Universiade
in Turin, Italy on January 16, 2007, making Shenzhen the youngest city to host the event in Universiade history. After that, Shenzhen quickly started all kinds of preparatory work for the Universiade.
Sports Venues
The city’s operating sports venues cover an area of more than 12 million square meters. The area for residents’ sports facilities totals about 4 million square meters.
Shenzhen Sports Center Situated in Futian District, the Shenzhen Sports Center covers an area of 278,000 square meters. In 1985, the 6,500-seat Shenzhen Gymnasium with a floor space of 21,200 square meters was built. In 1991, the Shenzhen Stadium, which has 30,000 seats and covers an area of 411,690 square meters, was built. In October 2002, the Shenzhen Swimming and Diving Natatorium was built, which covers an area of 54,300 square meters and has more than 4,000 seats.
In December 2002, the 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet was held at the Shenzhen Sports Center.
Luohu Gymnasium
Located in Luohu District and built in October 2002, the Luohu Gymnasium covers an area of 12,502 square meters and has 3,000 seats. It is one of the venues for important competitions of 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet.
Bao’an Gymnasium
Located in the new central area of Bao’an District, the Bao’an Gymnasium was built in September 2002. It has a floor space of 47,400 square meters and can accommodate 8,800 spectators. The closing ceremony of the 11th Guangdong Provincial Sports Meet was held here.
Longgang International Cycling Ground
Located in Longgang District, the ground serves as the country’s first standard international wooden-track arena that can hold track, road and mountain biking competitions simultaneously. In 2001, the cycling competitions of the Ninth National Games were held here.
