Output Value
In 2006, the high-tech industry in Shenzhen maintained high growth. At the end of 2006, the city posted 630.638 billion yuan in output value of high-tech products, up 29.1 percent over the previous year. Of the total output value, high-tech products with independent intellectual property rights reached 365.328 billion yuan, up 29.4 percent, accounting for 57.9 percent of the city’s total high-tech industrial turnover.

High-tech Enterprises
There were 2,000 companies involved in research and development of high-tech products in Shenzhen at the end of 2006, up 20.7 percent over the previous year.

Private Technology Firms
Shenzhen has 100,000 registered private technology enterprises, which boast a total capital of more than 100 billion yuan and account for more than 60 percent of the city’s 160,000 firms. Shenzhen is ranked only after Shanghai and Beijing in terms of the total number of private technology enterprises. As the most promising industry of the future, private technology enterprises provide an important boost for the city’s economic and social development.

Scientific Research
There are more than 30,000 enterprises involved in research and development of high-tech products in Shenzhen. In 2006, the output value of high-tech products with independent intellectual property rights reached 365.328 billion yuan, accounting for 57.9 percent of the city’s total high-tech output value.

Research Centers with Foreign Investment
The number of foreign-invested research centers with independent or non-independent legal person’s qualifications totals 87, in which US$1.77 billion of invested capital and US$1.321 billion of registered capital were involved.

Inventions and Patents
The total number of patent applications and authorizations in Shenzhen has grown rapidly year by year with an increasing percentage of invention patents. In 2006, patent applications totaled 29,728, up 42 percent over the previous year. Shenzhen ranked second in China in terms of the total number of patent applications and first in the category of invention patent and PCT international patent applications.
