THE Happy U was unveiled as the official logo of the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade at a party in Happy Valley yesterday.

The party marked the opening of the 10-day First Universiade Cultural Festival, which runs until Jan. 17. The festival aims to increase residents’ awareness of the 26th Summer Universiade.

Shenzhen Party chief Liu Yupu attended the party. In a speech, Mayor Xu Zongheng said: “It has been almost one year after Shenzhen won the bid to host the Games on Jan. 17, 2007. I hope the logo would become another Shenzhen brand to be remembered. The Games needs everybody’s care and participation.”

“In my 11-year career as a designer, this night is the most special I will never forget,” said Shenzhen resident Gao Ming, the designer of the winning logo.

The winning logo, chosen from more than 2,000 entries from all over the world, is composed of three parts: colored dots in the shape of a semicircle at the top, the words “Universiade SHENZHEN 2011” in the middle and five stars at the bottom.

The five stars represent the logo of the International University Sports Federation, the organizer of the World University Games, or Universiade.

The basic colors of the dots are red, green, yellow, blue and black. These dots, when put together, make up the letter “U,” which symbolizes the open, friendly and tolerant spirit of the Universiade.

The meaning of the logo can be summed up in six themes: Happy U, Open U, Tolerant U, Young U, International U and Future U.

The CCTV Channel 3 broadcast live the party, which featured a series of performances celebrating the first anniversary of the city’s successful bid for the 2011 Games.
