Shenzhen companies serve Olympics

MORE than 20 Shenzhen companies have provided products and services for the Beijing Olympic Games, beating many other international companies in the competitive bidding process.

Their products and services include high technology equipment, technical support through to food, clothing and souvenirs.

The huge light-emitting diode (LED) screen laid in the center of the Bird’s Nest at the opening ceremony was made by Glux OE-TECH (Shenzhen) Co.

The screen, developed and produced by Glux, is the first of its kind in the world, requiring high precision and stability. Its stage consisted of 8,624 specially-made LED screens with aluminum alloy shells. They are not only wear-resistant but also waterproof, allowing performers to dance on it even in the rain.

After an intense international bidding process and rigorous tests, Glux was finally awarded contracts in March, 2006 and allowed to provide all LED screens for the Beijing Olympic Games.

The extraordinary lighting effects of the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube are also from LED lights made by Shenzhen Likeda Optical Electricity Co.

A total of 260,000 LED lights have been installed at the Bird’s Nest, while there are as many as 480,000 LED lights at the Water Cube.

“The LED lights are much brighter than normal lights, but they only use 20 to 50 percent the energy so are more environmentally friendly,” Kou Kaitai, general manager of Shenzhen Likeda said.

Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp., the nation’s two major telecom equipment makers, are two of the major telecom equipment suppliers of the Beijing Olympics.

The Shenzhen Evening News reported Wednesday that during the Beijing Olympics, all the fixed-line and 80 percent of the wireless services were offered through equipment provided by Huawei Technologies.
