IV. Event Introduction:
Fencing is a competition between two players. During the competition, a touch to the opponent’s target areas with the point of the sword will be required. The player who hits the target areas the most wins the competition.
Foil, sabre and epee are the three items used in the sport of fencing. Each fencing event varies with different target areas and competition rules.
In foil, only a touch with the point of sword is scored. Hitting the opponent with the blade of sword will be considered invalid. The target areas include any part of the body above waist except hands and head. The target areas are covered with metallic plastron so that the electronic instrument is able to tell whether the hit is valid or invalid. Foil also emphasizes hit priority. The player who hits the target area first is scored. The defender shall defend the attacker effectively before counter-attack. Both players will score no point if they hit each other at the same time.
In sabre, a touch with the blade and point of the sword is allowed. The player who hits the target areas the most wins. These target areas include the upper part of the body, face mask and arms. All the target areas are covered with metallic plastron so that the electronic instrument is able to tell whether the hit is valid or invalid. Sabre also emphasizes hit priority. The player who hits the target area first is scored. The defender shall defend the attacker effectively before counter-attack. Both players will score no point if they hit each other at the same time. Sabre is the fastest and shortest fencing sport event.
In epee, only a touch with the point of sword is scored. Hitting the opponent with the blade of sword will be considered invalid. The target areas include the whole body such as the trunk of the body, limbs and face mask. Each hit shall be considered valid. If both players hit each other within a quarter of a second, they are scored. The points of the swords for both players are equipped with red light and green light probes. When one is hit, the point will produce a strong beam of light.
Fencing competition is divided into two parts, individual and team. In the individual competition, group round robin system and direct elimination system will be adopted, while in the team competition, single elimination system will be adopted.
Team competition consists of 4 members. Three will directly compete during the competition and one will serve as a substitute. Each player is allowed to attack five times during the 3 minutes round. There are a total of 9 rounds. The team who scores 45 points first wins the competition.
