Teenager becomes youngest organ donor

Feng Shihui

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy signed an agreement Sunday to donate all his organs after his death, becoming the youngest volunteer to have done so.

“If I pass away following failed medical treatment, I can still help others by donating these organs. What a meaningful thing it is,” said Feng Shihui, while lying in his bed at Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital.

Feng was diagnosed in May with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a rare blood condition of no known cause, which causes a low platelet count in patients. His early symptoms included headaches, a high fever and bleeding from the mouth and nose.

His parents took him to a number of different hospitals, and by the time he was hospitalized July 20, they had spent more than 300,000 yuan (US$43,932) on medical treatment.

His condition continued to deteriorate despite the best efforts of doctors.

When he signed the voluntary donation agreement Sunday, Feng was too weak to walk. His parents, who were present when he signed the paper, supported his decision.

Feng never showed any fear since he fell sick and he knew what he wanted to do. “I have been helped by others since I came into this world, especially after I fell sick,” he said. “If I leave this world without having had the chance to repay all the kindness and help I have received, how regrettable would that be?”
