THE organizing committee of the Shenzhen Summer Universiade on Thursday began soliciting a slogan worldwide for the 2011 Universiade volunteers.
“The slogan should summarize the concept of the Shenzhen Universiade and embody the city’s characteristics of openness, youth and fashion,” Cai Yifang, vice director of volunteer department of Shenzhen Summer Universiade Organizing Committee, said at a press conference.
“It also aims to highlight the volunteer spirits of involvement, cooperation, dedication and progress. The slogan should be understood and accepted by people from different countries and regions and of various cultural backgrounds,” Cai said.
Individuals or organizations from around the world are welcome to submit their entries in Chinese or English by Oct. 11 to www.sz2011.org. Twelve slogans will be shortlisted, and winning slogans will be chosen through an online vote.
In addition, experts will also be invited to create about 20 slogans. Eight of them will be selected and also put to a vote online, according to the organizing committee.
The final results will be announced Dec. 5, International Volunteers Day, Cai said. The first-prize winner will receive a 5,000-yuan (US$735) award. Three other entries will be given second prize with a 3,000-yuan award each, and six others will receive third prize and 1,000 yuan.
Zhang Zhihua, deputy director of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, encouraged university students across the world, especially Shenzhen university students and volunteers for the Universiade, to compile their favorite slogans.
Zhang said a total of 403 volunteers and 100 backup volunteers have received training since May, including oral English and services for the Universiade.
