Bad Day for Favorites

Today’s heroes – Klaudia Jan from Poland and Spanish double David Estruch Mano and Ignasi Vallacampa Roses

The fifth day of competitions at the 25th summer Universiade in Belgrade was defined by unexpected turnovers on the courts of SC Milan Gale Muskatirovic.

The first big surprise came from the Polish player Klaudia Jans who defeated first seed Russian Vitaliya Diachenko with the score of 2:0 (6:4, 6:4).

Obviously disappointed with the loss, Diachenko left the court immediately, but Klaudia Jans could not contain her happiness:

– I was not planning on playing in singles but I showed up anyway. I am very happy. This victory is a big motivation for me. I enjoy playing in Belgrade, the surface is very good. The University village and people are great.

The second blow of the day for the Russian team came in doubles by the hands of the Spanish pair, David Estruch Mano and Ignasi Vallacampa Roses. They defeated first seeded double Evgeny Donskoy and Denis Matsukevich with the score of 2:1.

The favorites left the court unhappy but the Spanish could not believe what they have done:

– I have no words to express what we feel right now. We cannot believe we won. I hope we continue in the same rhythm – said Ignasi Vallacampa Roses and continued: – I am tired but really happy that I had two victories today, in singles and in doubles. The semi finals and the medals are ahead of us now. Yesterday was also effected by one hour rain delay.
