Students to compete in Universiade speech contest

A total of 30 contestants selected from Shenzhen primary and middle schools will compete in an English speech contest Saturday at Shenzhen Press Tower Auditorium (深圳报业大厦会堂) in Futian District.

The contest, part of the city’s Speak•Shenzhen campaign which was initiated in 2004, aims to get more city residents to learn English, especially after the city won the right to host the 2011 Summer Universiade.

The contestants have been divided into three groups according to age. Senior high school students will speak on “Shenzhen Embraces the World,” junior middle school students will speak on “Give a Helping Hand As a Volunteer” and primary school students will speak on “My Universiade Dream.”

According to the event’s organizers, the Shenzhen Daily and Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, the contest is the largest of its kind in Shenzhen this year.(Han Ximin)
