New incentives to attract talent to city

THE city government will soon introduce a series of preferential policies to attract professionals to work in Shenzhen.

Subsidies for housing and entrepreneurship are among the new incentives the government is offering to lure both domestic and international professionals here, according to yesterday’s Chinese-language newspapers.

The incentives are expected to introduce experienced professionals in a variety of fields contributing to the city’s sustained economic growth, which has encountered a bottleneck during its transformation from a world manufacturing base to a service-oriented economy.

“Professionals in science and high technology were the focus of the city government’s personnel program in past years. It had now been extended to include finance, art and cultural industry, as well as public services,” the Southern Metropolis Daily quoted Wang Min, director of the personnel bureau, as saying yesterday.

The government would send delegations to Europe and North America in search of professionals with expertise in those fields, Wang said.

“More than 700 openings for senior positions will be on offer at the North American recruitment fair in October. Some Shenzhen companies are offering annual salaries higher than 1 million yuan (US$) for some of the vacancies.”

He said entrepreneurs who came here to start business were eligible for a government subsidy of 300,000 yuan during the incubation period under the new policies.

Those desired talent would have their children taken care of by the city government if they settled in Shenzhen. “To my knowledge, children’s education is one of the top concerns for many professionals when choosing a city in which to work. They will be reassured by the government that public schools in the city will be open to their children,” Wang was quoted by Shenzhen Economic Daily as saying.
