Work on Universiade venues in full play

Construction on the venues of the 2011 Universiade including the main venue Universiade Center and subvenue Shenzhen University Town sports center is in full swing the city’s public works bureau said yesterday stressing on the high quality of the work.

Construction on the sports center of Shenzhen University Town began at the end of May with the preparatory work being started on the construction of the Universiade Center and other sports venues for the Universiade.Shenzhen plans to build more than 20 sports venues and upgrade about 30 old sports facilities for competition or training in order to make the 2011 Universiade an unqualified success.

Located in northeastern Shenzhen and only 15 km away from the downtown area of the city the Universiade Center will be the main venue of the 2011 Universiade.

The sports complex another potential landmark of the city will include a main stadium a gymnasium an indoor swimming pool the Universiade Village a large square for mass sports events an integrated service center and a media center. The Universiade Center will be ready by the end of 2010.

Now full-scale preparations for the construction of the Universiade Center are underway. Last April the municipal public works bureau signed a design contract with Germany’s GMP company China Northeast Architectural Design & Research Institute Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design & Research and China Construction Design International. In May the design of the Universiade Center won the approval of experts and in June the surveying and geological assessment of the area began with a ceremony held by the city’s public works bureau.

Construction on the first sports facility the Shenzhen University Town sports center commenced in May. The construction of the sports center near the beautiful Tanglang Mountain and Dasha River is a prelude to large-scale construction of sports facilities. Covering 171,917.9 square meters of land and with a construction area of 38,493 square meters the 257.1-million-yuan US$33.4 million sports center will include a gymnasium a stadium and a swimming pool. The gymnasium with a construction area of 14,183 square meters will have 5,696 seats while the 15,300-square-meter stadium will have 5,696 seats and the 9,010-square-meter swimming pool area 2,251 seats. The project which is going on smoothly is expected to be completed before the 2011 Universiade.

The municipal public works bureau vowed yesterday to develop high-quality sports facilities for the 2011 Universiade in a short time with the minimum amount of money.
