SZ Bay Sports Center planned

CONSTRUCTION of the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center will be completed in 2010, according to the Nanshan District Construction Bureau, in time to host some of 2011’s Universiade events.

The 960-million-yuan (US$124.68 million) center will include a 20,000-square-meter stadium, a 25,000-square-meter gymnasium and a 35,000-square-meter health club including swimming facilities.

Covering an area of 300,000 square meters, the new sports center will be part of a larger sports complex integrating sports, fitness gyms, leisure and exhibition space, officials with the construction bureau said.

The project borders Binhai Road to the north, Keyuan Road to the west, Shahe Road East to the east and the Shenzhen Bay lake to the south.

Three events, soccer, table tennis and water polo, will be held at the sports center during the 26th Universiade.

The sports center will also cater to the needs of residents living nearby, greatly relieving the shortage of sports facilities in the area. In Nanshan District, most sports facilities are located in universities and schools, which are not open to the public.(Han Ximin)
