Medical staff offer top service

A TOP-STANDARD hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities and 600 staff, has opened in the Olympic Village.

Olympic villagers can enjoy free medical services including dentistry and eye-care in the three-story hospital, which is located in the southern part of the village that houses about 16,000 athletes, coaches and their entourages.

Medical equipment including MRI, ultrasonic devices, absorptiometry and electrocardiogram instruments are in place, Sun Lianping, chief of the first aid group in the Olympic Village, said Saturday.

Some 600 medical staff have been chosen from the best hospitals in Beijing to be 24-hour on standby to deal with emergencies, he said.

“Although the athletes enjoy better physical conditions than ordinary people, we should as well stay on alert for any possible emergencies and provide the best services for them,” he said.

The team has four Mercedes ambulances, and each is equipped with three professional medical staffers. The ambulances will be used to transfer patients to the nearest Olympic-appointed hospital in the shortest time possible if the illness cannot be treated with first aid inside the village.

Working as volunteers in the Olympic Village, the doctors will work on weekends until the end of the Paralympics.
