Temporary houses put into use

A TOTAL of 304 fully functional temporary houses, gifted by Shenzhen to residents in quake-hit Sichuan Province, were put into use Sunday, the day of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Vice Mayor Lu Ruifeng handed over keys to the first batch of 304 finished quake-relief houses to officials in Shifang City at a ceremony Sunday, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

The Shenguoqi residential area, the first of 12 Shenzhen-built construction sites in Shifang to be ready, has street lights, public conveniences, public shower rooms and kitchens, and space to accommodate more than 1,000 people.

A total of 5,539 temporary houses had been completed by the Shenzhen quake-relief team in Sichuan Province by 5 p.m. Sunday, showing Shenzhen’s speed and efficiency in construction, according to the report.

“Although we have made some achievements, we still have to work hard under heavy pressure under a tight schedule because the Shenzhen team will have to finish 10,000 temporary houses by June 25,” said Lu during the ceremony.

The 12 Shenzhen construction sites employ nearly 4,000 workers from seven companies.

The Shenzhen quake-relief team also constructed seven classrooms and an office to allow NCEE examinees to take the tests at Shifang Middle School.

Construction of temporary houses started in Shifang right after the advance quake-relief team entered the quake-hit areas May 23.
