TODDLER, Duan Yating, just 19 months old, became a beneficiary of the city’s medical insurance scheme for children when she was discharged from Shenzhen Children’s Hospital in Futian District at the end of April.

“My daughter was taken to the hospital and was there for more than a week in April when she fell at home and badly injured her back,” her mother surnamed Yang, who is living in Bao’an District, said yesterday.

“More than 500 yuan (US$71) of her total medical fees have been recovered because she joined the city’s medical insurance scheme for children last September,” Yang said.

Statistics from the city’s social security fund management bureau show that by Saturday, a total of 363,000 young Shenzhen residents had joined the city’s medical insurance program for children since it was implemented Sept. 1 last year.

By Saturday, a total of 11,596 insured children had had a total of more than 24 million yuan of their medical fees covered.

Of all insured children, 342,000 have so far received their medical insurance cards. For children who haven’t received their cards, their parents are advised to contact the city’s social security fund management bureau by calling the hotline: 96888, or on the Web site: http://www.szsi.gov.cn.
