City gives 20 million yuan to Longnan

SHENZHEN donated 20 million yuan (US$2.86 million) along with some relief goods, including medicines, tents and stationery, to Longnan City in Gansu Province to help its post-earthquake reconstruction.

Shenzhen’s Party chief Liu Yupu and Mayor Xu Zongheng handed over the donations to the quake-stricken city before embarking on an inspection of Wenxian County, one of the hardest-hit counties in Longnan, on Sunday.

The Shenzhen delegation, headed by the city’s Party chief and mayor, arrived in Wenxian to discuss the reconstruction with local officials after being designated by the Central Government to help rebuild Longnan.

“The donation is just part of help from Shenzhen. We will formulate a detailed plan to help the quake-jolted city by establishing an effective communication mechanism with our counterparts,” said Liu after donating the money.

In recent days, the delegation has visited villages devastated by the massive earthquake and met with local officials and villagers. Most buildings in Wenxian County were flattened in the earthquake.

“Shenzhen will unswervingly finish the assignments from Central Government and Guangdong Provincial Government to help rebuild Longnan City,” Liu told villagers.

The inspection trip was the first step of a plan for Shenzhen to provide aid and assistance to Longnan City, according to the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily. The city government will then set up a task force consisting of young professionals and government employees and send them to Longnan to help carry out the reconstruction.
