'Volunteers better be multilingual'

KAIRIS LEINUS ULP, a member of FISU Executive Committee, who is on her first visit to Shenzhen, said she was most impressed by the city.

Ulp, from Estonia’s university city of Tartu, was the first of the FISU officials to arrive in Shenzhen for the AUSF Gerneral Assembly and amazed to see the many skyscrapers of Shenzhen, even though she had learned a lot about the city from Shenzhen’s bid for the 2011 Universiade.

Before she arrived in the city, she had discovered that Shenzhen was a young, modern and vigorous city, and that 45 percent of Shenzheners love sports. She said she would try to find some time to look around the city while attending the conference.

“I’m looking forward to the 2011 Universiade to be held in Shenzhen and I have full confidence in it,” Ulp said.

Ulp has been attending Universiades since 1995 and she said she thought each one was better than its predecessor. “It’s foreseeable that Shenzhen will host a splendid Universiade. In 2011, Estonia will send a 100-member delegation to Shenzhen,” she said. For a country with a population of only 1.5 million, it was a really big delegation, she added.

Good organization is necessary to hold a successful sports event, Ulp said. She suggested good preparations for facilities and services before the event, and live broadcasting to the world during the 2011 Universiade. “It’s a good way to enhance Shenzhen’s international profile,” Ulp said.

Ulp also gave her opinion on the 11 games logos vying to be official, which were revealed by the city government Thursday. (Liu Simin, Shenzhen Daily)
