A TOTAL of 13 graduates from Shenzhen University will leave Shenzhen today to work voluntarily in Gansu Province for a year to help rebuild quake-hit regions.

They were chosen from 100 applicants. Two of them are postgraduate students who were able to have the suspension of studies for one year approved so they could join the voluntary program.

Most of the students majored in education and architecture, and will work in Longnan City, Gansu, one of the disaster areas the Central Government designated Shenzhen to help. Their main duties will focus on construction projects, psychological counseling and education.

It is the first graduate team the city has sent to Longnan and more college graduates will be sent under the program, which was advocated by the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) in June.

Performance reports would be submitted to the school authority every three months and those who failed in their tasks would be sent back, Jiang Tanyu, Party chief of the Shenzhen University, said yesterday.

“I hope they can cope with all the difficulties and return in very good health and spirit,” said Yin Tao, vice head of the Shenzhen University committee of the CYLC.

The Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CYLC will use donations from league members to help build an activity center for juveniles in Wudu County, Longnan, within a year.

The center will organize activities and offer psychological counseling for children in the disaster areas.

Meanwhile, a 10-day summer camp named “Shenzhen Longnan — One Family” will be held in mid-July. A total of 50 children from Longnan between 5 and 14 will be invited to Shenzhen to take part in activities with 50 children from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao.

Families who are willing to offer free homestay for them can apply to the Shenzhen Youth Federation by logging on to www. szyouth.cn or call 12355 for further information.
