World Cup bronze medalist crashes out of taekwondo quarterfinal

BANGKOK, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese taekwondo young talent Wang Mengli, 19, bronze medalist of last year’s World Cup Team championships, lost the quarterfinal duel to Ma. criselda Roxas of Philippines in the women’s 72kg category at the 24th Universiade.

Ma. criselda edged Wang with a sudden death, as the regular three rounds saw a 2-2 tie.

Wang attributed her loss to the lack of experience.

“I’m taller than her, so I shouldn’t have fought with her in close range,” Wang said.

However, Wang was still confident of fulfiling her dream of becoming a world champion.

The Chinese taekwondo team had a gloomy day here Thursday as both two fielded players were knocked out.

Ding He, who competed in men’s 84kg class, was ousted in the preliminaries by Yousef Karami from Iran.
